What Olympic Motion Design Gets Right

Our motion team has a tradition: when an Olympics is on, somebody keeps a running frame-grab folder, and midway through the Games we sit down and tear the graphics package apart over lunch. Milan-Cortina has kept us busy. The Italians came into these Winter Games with a design lineage that includes some of the best identity work of the last century, and the pressure to live up to it was visible in every lower third.

Two weeks of close watching later, here is what this Olympiad's motion system gets right, and why it matters for anyone building a brand that has to move.

The system flexes without dissolving

An Olympic broadcast package is the hardest brief in motion design. One system has to serve figure skating and ski cross, a medal ceremony and a crash replay, a stadium screen and a phone notification, in dozens of languages, for seventeen days, without the audience ever feeling a seam.

What Milan-Cortina's package understands is that coherence lives in behavior, not in decoration. The graphics share a physics: how panels enter, how weight settles, how type resolves from motion into stillness. The ornamental layer shifts by venue and sport, but the movement grammar never breaks character. You could mute the screen, strip the logos, and still know which Games you were watching from how a scoreboard arrives.

This is the exact principle we push in product and brand work. Most motion guidelines fail because they specify assets, not behavior. A brand should own an easing curve the way it owns a typeface. When we built Aperture's product motion language, the entire system reduced to four verbs with defined physics, and that small grammar has survived two redesigns precisely because it was never about any particular animation.

Restraint reads as scale

The second lesson is about confidence. The most-watched moments of these Games, medal ceremonies, record confirmations, use the quietest graphics in the package. Slow builds, generous holds, type that simply appears and stays. The system saves its kinetic energy for transitions and recaps, and goes still when the moment itself is loud.

Compare that with the average brand launch film, where every second is fighting for attention and therefore none of them win it. Motion design has a loudness war problem, and the Olympics, of all things, is a masterclass in dynamics: the power of a system comes from its range, and range requires quiet.

  • If everything moves, nothing is emphasized.
  • If every entrance is spectacular, arrival stops meaning anything.
  • The stillness after motion is where the audience actually reads.

We now write "dynamics maps" into our motion guidelines: explicit direction about which moments in a product or campaign get energy and which get silence. It sounds obvious. Almost nobody does it.

Real-time 3D grew up in public

The technical story of these Games is how completely real-time rendering has replaced pre-rendered graphics in broadcast. Venue flythroughs, athlete introductions, and data visualizations are being composed live, at broadcast quality, with the render engine responding to results as they happen. Five years ago that pipeline was a risky flex. Now it is invisible infrastructure.

For brand work this changes the calculus on 3D identity systems. A brand world built in a real-time engine is no longer a film asset. It is a live system that can respond to data, localize itself, and render for a stadium screen and a watch face from one source. We have two identity projects in the studio right now where the primary brand asset is a real-time scene, not a logo file, and the Milan-Cortina broadcast is the reference we keep sending clients to explain why.

The Games end this weekend. The frame-grab folder is 400 images deep. The lesson on top of the pile: motion is a language, and languages need grammar more than they need vocabulary. Define how your brand moves and when it holds still, and the rest is execution.
